More about the product

The SS 1st Class Marksman Sleeve Diamond was one of the more distinctive proficiency insignia worn by members of the Waffen-SS and Allgemeine-SS prior to and during the early years of the Second World War.

The award was officially introduced in November 1937 as part of the SS leadership’s broader emphasis on military training, discipline, and combat readiness. It recognized SS personnel who demonstrated outstanding performance in weapons handling and competitive shooting.

Design & Appearance

The insignia consisted of a black diamond-shaped cloth patch worn on the lower left sleeve. Centered within the diamond was an embroidered SS-style rune and marksmanship device, usually executed in silver-gray thread for the 1st Class level. Variations existed depending on period, manufacturer, and branch of service.

Award Requirements

To qualify for the 1st Class award, candidates had to achieve exceptionally high scores in:

  • Rifle shooting
  • Pistol proficiency
  • Tactical firing exercises
  • General weapons competency

The qualification standards were deliberately demanding and required repeated successful performance rather than a single test. The SS leadership intended the award to promote elite combat standards within its ranks.

Who Could Receive It

The badge could be awarded to:

  • Members of the Waffen-SS
  • Allgemeine-SS personnel
  • SS officer candidates
  • Certain SS training cadre and instructors

Recipients were typically men who regularly participated in SS shooting competitions and military exercises.

Historical Importance

The sleeve diamond reflects the SS obsession with elite military identity and pre-war paramilitary culture. Before the war, shooting competitions formed an important part of SS ceremonial and training activities. After the outbreak of WWII, combat decorations gradually overshadowed many of these proficiency insignia, making surviving original sleeve diamonds comparatively scarce today.

Collecting & Authenticity

Original SS sleeve diamonds are heavily reproduced. Collectors usually examine:

  • Correct wartime weave and backing material
  • Embroidery thread type
  • UV reaction of the cloth
  • Stitching pattern and edge finish
  • Provenance or period photographs

Authentic examples command strong prices on the militaria market, especially if attributed or uniform-removed.

Related SS Proficiency Insignia

Other SS skill and sports awards included:

  • SA/SS marksmanship lanyards
  • SS sports badges
  • Driver proficiency patches
  • Signals and specialist trade insignia

For collectors, the 1st Class sleeve diamond is considered one of the more visually striking early SS cloth awards
