An outstanding and unquestionably prestigious original Luftwaffe General’s visor cap (Schirmmütze), manufactured in the distinctive blue-grey tricot wool reserved for general officers of the German Air Force during the Third Reich. This elegant example displays the refined craftsmanship and luxurious materials associated with high-ranking Luftwaffe headgear.
The cap is constructed from fine blue-grey wool with the correct gold Waffenfarbe piping around the crown and upper band, denoting general officer status. The black mohair centre band remains in excellent condition and is fitted with the correct hand-embroidered gilt bullion Luftwaffe winged wreath and national cockade, displaying exceptional detail and rich patina acquired through age.
Mounted to the front is the beautifully hand-embroidered gold bullion Luftwaffe eagle, expertly executed in fine gilt wire over a dark blue backing. Both insignia exhibit the quality expected of wartime private-purchase officers’ headgear and remain firmly attached.
The cap retains its original gold-and-brown interwoven bullion chin cords, secured by matching gilt side buttons, together with the black lacquered vulcanfibre visor, which has retained an attractive polished finish. The visor shows only light age-related wear and remains free from significant damage.
The body of the cap has retained its elegant saddle shape, while the cloth remains clean with excellent colour throughout. The bullion embroidery has mellowed to a pleasing golden tone, complementing the overall appearance of this impressive example.
A Luftwaffe General’s visor cap represented one of the highest-status items of military dress within the German armed forces and was worn by senior commanders responsible for directing air operations, anti-aircraft defences, and administrative commands.
