Kaufmann SA dagger: identification and construction

This Kaufmann SA dagger follows the Model 1933 SA service-dagger pattern. It combines a shaped wooden grip, curved metal crossguards and a double-edged blade. A brown metal scabbard accompanies the dagger, completing its recognisable profile. The reddish-brown grip retains visible grain and defined contours. An inset SA roundel sits near the pommel, while a metal eagle occupies the centre of the grip. In addition, the photographs show the fit between the wood and crossguards from both sides. The fittings have a silver-grey appearance and surface patina. Although their appearance is consistent with early-pattern construction, photographs alone cannot establish the precise alloy.

Blade, motto and maker mark

The obverse carries a clearly legible etched “Alles für Deutschland” motto. Its dark lettering contrasts with the reflective blade surface, making the inscription a prominent feature. On the reverse, the circular maker mark reads “Heinr. Kaufmann & Söhne, Solingen” around a central shield emblem. The close photograph provides a useful record of the lettering and trademark. The blade also shows fine surface lines and scattered darker marks. Consequently, the description should acknowledge these details rather than describe the blade as mint or untouched. Reflections affect its appearance, so physical examination remains necessary to distinguish the original finish from later surface treatment.

Crossguard marking and scabbard

The lower crossguard appears to carry the letters “Wm”. A sharper, upright photograph would allow a more confident reading before adding a specific regional attribution.Meanwhile, the scabbard retains a substantial brown surface finish, with scratches, spotting and localised wear. Its upper mount carries a suspension ring. The lower mount terminates in a rounded ball and shows minor surface marks. The photographs show screws in the scabbard fittings. However, they do not establish whether every screw and component belongs to the original assembly. No leather hanger appears in the listing photographs.

Heinrich Kaufmann & Söhne

Heinrich Kaufmann & Söhne was a Solingen cutlery manufacturer represented among documented SA dagger makers. This example carries the company’s named trademark rather than an RZM-only manufacturer code. For comparison, consult the Lakesidetrader German blade maker-mark reference, which includes Kaufmann & Söhne. The visible trademark supports the maker identification without requiring an unsupported rarity rating or production-total claim.

Condition and authentication assessment

The dagger presents well overall. Its grip retains a rich reddish-brown appearance, with handling marks visible in the photographs. The metal fittings show patina, while the blade retains a clear motto and readable maker mark.By comparison, the scabbard displays more noticeable finish wear and spotting. These features form part of its condition and remain visible in the detailed images. The construction and named maker mark are broadly consistent with an early SA dagger. Nevertheless, a complete authentication requires inspection of the insignia, component fit and concealed construction. No documented named-wearer provenance accompanies the information supplied.Explore our SA and NSKK daggers or browse the wider historical edged weapons collection.
