Original WWII German Cross in Gold (Deutsches Kreuz in Gold) Cloth Version (Stoffausführung)

An original and highly desirable WWII German Cross in Gold (Deutsches Kreuz in Gold) embroidered cloth version, executed in high-quality multi-piece construction and mounted on the correct Wehrmacht field-grey wool backing. Measuring approximately 74 mm in diameter, this example conforms to the dimensions commonly encountered on period cloth versions intended for direct wear on the field tunic.

The badge displays the classic eight-point star embroidered in silver-grey thread, surrounding a finely executed gilt laurel wreath. The centre retains the correct separate black embroidered swastika applied to a tan cloth roundel, enclosed by the distinctive red embroidered ring. The layered construction and quality of the embroidery are entirely consistent with wartime manufacture, while the reverse is finished with the typical black backing cloth found on original sewn examples.

The cloth German Cross was introduced as a practical alternative to the heavy metal pin-back award, allowing recipients to wear the decoration comfortably during active service without damaging the uniform. These embroidered versions were privately purchased from military tailors and specialist manufacturers and were worn by recipients serving in the Heer, Waffen-SS, Luftwaffe and Kriegsmarine. As there was no officially designated Waffen-SS pattern, embroidered examples of this type were suitable for wear by recipients across all branches of the German armed forces.

Awarded for repeated acts of bravery or outstanding military leadership beyond the requirements for the Iron Cross First Class, the German Cross in Gold occupied one of the highest positions in the German awards hierarchy, ranking above the Iron Cross First Class and below the Knight’s Cross of the Iron Cross.

This example exhibits excellent period construction with attractive ageing and remains a superb representative of one of the Third Reich’s most prestigious combat awards. Original embroidered German Crosses in Gold are considerably scarcer than their metal counterparts and are increasingly sought after by advanced collectors of German militaria, uniforms and wartime insignia.
