An outstanding museum-quality Luftwaffe German Cross in Gold Cloth Version (Deutsches Kreuz in Gold). It ranks among the most desirable embroidered combat awards of the Second World War. Originally, cloth versions were produced as a lighter alternative to the heavy metal breast badge. As a result, the decoration could be worn comfortably on the field blouse while retaining all of its prestige.
This superb example is constructed on the correct field-grey wool backing. Furthermore, the eight-pointed star is finished in fine silver bullion embroidery. At the centre is a black embroidered swastika on a silver-grey woven field. In addition, the design is completed by a gilt laurel wreath and vivid red embroidered border. The quality of the bullion work is exceptional, while the wartime craftsmanship remains immediately apparent.
The reverse retains its original black backing cloth. Moreover, the correct hand-cut attachment slits remain in place for mounting the insignia to the uniform. Honest service wear is present, yet the stitching remains untouched. Consequently, the award has retained its original wartime character without evidence of restoration.
The German Cross in Gold was instituted on 28 September 1941. It was awarded for repeated acts of bravery or outstanding leadership in combat. Therefore, it ranked above the Iron Cross First Class but below the Knight’s Cross. The decoration was presented to many of the Luftwaffe’s most accomplished fighter pilots, bomber crews, flak personnel and ground combat troops.
Far fewer cloth versions were produced than metal examples. Moreover, they were intended for active service and were often exposed to heavy wear. Consequently, many examples were damaged or discarded after the war. Well-preserved originals are now rarely encountered. For this reason, examples of this quality are highly sought after by advanced collectors.
The attractive age-related patina, crisp bullion embroidery and untouched construction place this insignia firmly within the investment-grade category. Equally important, its originality has been preserved throughout. Finally, it would make an outstanding addition to any serious Luftwaffe or German militaria collection. It is equally suitable for a museum-quality display.
