An exceptional original 15th Waffen-Grenadier Division of the SS (Latvian No. 1) collar tab (Kragenspiegel). This scarce insignia features the distinctive Latvian sunburst with three stars, one of the most recognisable divisional emblems worn by the Latvian Legion during the Second World War. Original examples remain highly desirable because relatively few survived in untouched condition.
This collar tab represents an important piece of wartime uniform insignia and appeals to collectors specialising in Waffen-SS, Baltic military history and rare divisional insignia.
This example features finely executed silver-grey machine embroidery on the correct black wool backing. The traditional Latvian emblem displays crisp detail and excellent definition throughout. Furthermore, the embroidery remains bright and well preserved, highlighting the quality of wartime manufacture.
The reverse retains its original buckram stiffener together with the correct folded backing and factory stitching. Moreover, no evidence of restoration or alteration is visible. These characteristics remain consistent with authentic wartime production.
The 15th Waffen-Grenadier Division of the SS (Latvian No. 1) was formed in February 1943 from the newly established Latvian Legion. Together with the 19th Waffen-Grenadier Division of the SS (Latvian No. 2), it formed the principal military formations of the Latvian Legion under German command. The division served primarily on the Eastern Front before withdrawing into Germany during the final months of the war.
The collar tab displayed the traditional Latvian sunburst and three stars, a national symbol that represented the historic regions of Latvia. Consequently, it stood apart from the standard SS runic collar tabs and gave the division a distinctive identity.
Collectors actively seek original Latvian Legion collar tabs because they identify one of the most recognisable foreign volunteer formations within the Waffen-SS. Furthermore, many original examples disappeared during the war or in the post-war period.
Examples retaining their original buckram backing, factory stitching and sharp embroidery have become increasingly difficult to locate. Therefore, this collar tab represents an outstanding addition to any advanced collection of original German or Latvian wartime insignia.
The collar tab remains in excellent original condition. The embroidery retains outstanding detail, while the black wool backing shows only light age-related wear. In addition, the reverse preserves its original buckram stiffener and factory stitching. Overall, this is a museum-quality collector’s example with exceptional display appeal.
