The design features three finely embroidered oak leaves tied at the stems with a single silver rank pip positioned to the upper right. This combination identifies the rank of SS-Gruppenführer, one of the highest general officer grades within the SS. The patch is finished with the correct twisted aluminium bullion border and retains its original black wool backing with evidence of period uniform attachment.

The embroidery remains exceptionally crisp, with excellent definition to the individually padded oak leaves. The raised bullion work creates impressive depth and texture, while the original black velvet background provides a strong contrast that highlights the intricate silver embroidery.
The rank of SS-Gruppenführer was introduced in the early years of the SS and became one of its principal general officer ranks. Officers holding this rank commanded major Waffen-SS formations, Higher SS and Police districts (Höhere SS- und Polizeiführer), administrative offices and regional SS commands. Many Gruppenführer exercised authority over thousands of personnel and played key roles within the SS command structure.
Hand-embroidered collar patches such as this were privately purchased by many senior officers. Specialist embroidery firms produced these insignia using high-quality aluminium bullion wire and velvet backing. Their workmanship far exceeded that of machine-woven examples and reflected the prestige associated with general officer uniforms.
