The design features three hand-embroidered oak leaves with a single silver rank pip positioned in the upper right corner. This combination denotes the rank of SS-Gruppenführer, equivalent to a lieutenant general. A twisted aluminium bullion border frames the patch, while the reverse retains its original black wool backing and evidence of period uniform wear.
The raised bullion embroidery gives the oak leaves outstanding depth and definition. The black velvet background creates a striking contrast that highlights the intricate silver thread. Overall, the collar patch presents extremely well and retains excellent detail throughout.
The rank of SS-Gruppenführer ranked among the senior general officer grades within both the Allgemeine-SS and the Waffen-SS. Officers of this rank commanded divisions, corps, regional SS districts and Higher SS and Police commands. Many also directed major administrative departments within the SS leadership.
Senior officers often purchased their uniforms and insignia privately. Specialist embroidery firms produced these collar patches using hand-applied aluminium bullion on velvet. Their workmanship exceeded that of machine-woven examples and reflected the prestige of the officers who wore them.
Today, original hand-embroidered SS general officer collar patches remain considerably scarcer than standard officer insignia. Collectors value them for their rarity, quality and historical significance.
