Historical Background

Instituted on 20 December 1939 by Generaloberst Walther von Brauchitsch, the Panzer Assault Badge recognised the courage and combat service of officers and enlisted personnel serving with Germany’s Panzer arm. To qualify, recipients were required to participate in multiple armoured assaults on separate days while serving in active combat.

As the war progressed, the badge became one of the Wehrmacht’s most recognisable combat decorations and remains highly sought after by collectors of German military awards.

Construction

This example is manufactured using the correct wartime die-struck construction and displays the sharply defined features expected of an original period badge.

The reverse retains its original:

  • Broad flat-wire pin
  • Barrel hinge
  • Sheet-metal catch
  • Original soldered fittings

The badge remains unmarked, a characteristic encountered on a number of wartime Panzer Assault Badges produced by approved German manufacturers.

Its attractive silver finish has mellowed naturally over time, creating the desirable aged appearance favoured by collectors.

Condition

Presented in very good original condition, the badge displays crisp detail across the eagle, wreath and Panzer tank. The original finish remains well preserved with honest age-related wear and an attractive untouched patina.

The reverse retains its original hinge, pin and catch assembly, all of which remain secure. The badge has never been excessively cleaned and presents exactly as collectors prefer to find authentic wartime awards.

Collectability

The Panzer Assault Badge remains one of the most iconic awards of the German Army during the Second World War. Original examples with untouched finishes and complete fittings continue to experience strong demand among collectors of Wehrmacht combat decorations.

This example combines excellent detail, honest originality and pleasing eye appeal, making it an outstanding acquisition for both experienced collectors and those building a high-quality collection of German military awards.
