Historical Background

The 12 Year Army Long Service Medal formed part of the Wehrmacht Long Service Decorations instituted on 16 March 1936. These awards recognised career members of the German armed forces who completed specified periods of honourable service. The 12-year medal represented the Third Class of the series and was worn alongside the 4-year medal by qualifying recipients. The branch of service was identified by a miniature eagle fitted to the ribbon, with Heer and Kriegsmarine examples using the spread-wing eagle.
