An exceptionally rare and highly desirable matched pair of original Waffen-SS Oberführer shoulder boards, manufactured in the distinctive officer-quality bullion braid associated with the senior ranks of the SS. Constructed on the correct field-grey wool underlay, these shoulder boards exhibit the intricate interwoven gold and silver Russian braid reserved for general officer ranks and remain an outstanding example of original Second World War Waffen-SS insignia.
The heavy gilt and silver bullion cords remain tightly woven, retaining excellent definition, colour and texture throughout. The boards display the elegant, hand-finished construction expected of privately tailored insignia produced for senior SS officers.
The reverse retains the original field-grey wool backing, exhibiting honest service wear, light moth tracking and minor age-related imperfections consistent with wartime use. Importantly, the boards remain an untouched matching pair and have not been restored or rebuilt.
The rank of SS-Oberführer occupied a unique position within the SS hierarchy. It ranked above Standartenführer (Colonel) and below Brigadeführer, which later became equivalent to a major general. Although technically not a general officer rank during the early years of the SS, Oberführer was reserved for experienced senior commanders entrusted with significant leadership responsibilities.
Oberführer officers served as commanders of SS-Abschnitte, Oberabschnitte, Waffen-SS formations and senior administrative headquarters. Many later advanced to the rank of Brigadeführer and held divisional or corps-level appointments during the Second World War.
Unlike lower officer ranks, only a relatively small number of men attained the rank of Oberführer, making surviving insignia considerably scarcer than those of junior officers.
These shoulder boards display the classic characteristics associated with original Waffen-SS senior officer insignia:
The combination of bullion quality, braid pattern and construction is entirely consistent with wartime production for senior Waffen-SS officers.
This matching pair remains in very good original condition.

The slight wear to the reverse does not detract from the rarity or desirability of these shoulder boards and confirms their period use.
Original Waffen-SS general officer shoulder boards are among the rarest surviving pieces of SS uniform insignia. Because so few officers achieved the rank of Oberführer, authentic matching pairs seldom appear on the collectors’ market.
Their importance is further enhanced by the high-quality private tailoring typical of senior officers, making them a centrepiece for advanced collections of Waffen-SS uniforms, insignia or general officer memorabilia.
Based on the photographs, the construction, bullion braid, field-grey underlay and overall manufacture are consistent with original wartime Waffen-SS senior officer shoulder boards.
The weave, braid thickness and ageing all appear appropriate for period examples. The reverse shows expected service wear, minor moth damage and natural ageing without obvious indications of modern assembly.
As with all high-value Waffen-SS insignia, definitive authentication should include an in-hand examination under magnification, ultraviolet inspection and comparison with known original examples. Based on the visible evidence, these shoulder boards display characteristics consistent with authentic wartime manufacture.
