An exceptional Original RZM labelled SS collar tab, manufactured on black wool and retaining its scarce original Reichszeugmeisterei (RZM) acceptance label to the reverse. Marked with the official manufacturer code A4/308 and serial number B Nr. 011959, this collar tab represents an increasingly difficult-to-find example of officially authorised SS insignia from the Third Reich period.
Unlike the majority of surviving SS collar tabs, which have lost their factory paper labels through tailoring, wear, or post-war handling, this example still preserves its original RZM inspection label. Consequently, it provides valuable evidence of official manufacture and greatly enhances its appeal to collectors of original SS uniforms and insignia.
The black wool construction is entirely consistent with period SS collar tabs. However, as only the reverse has been examined, the precise pattern cannot yet be identified. The front design will determine whether the tab belongs to the Allgemeine-SS, SS-Verfügungstruppe (SS-VT), or an early Waffen-SS formation.
The RZM labelled SS collar tab formed part of the official uniform system controlled by the Reichszeugmeisterei, the organisation responsible for regulating the manufacture and quality of National Socialist uniforms and insignia.
Each approved manufacturer received a unique registration code. The designation A4/308 identifies an authorised textile producer responsible for manufacturing embroidered insignia under RZM supervision. Every approved item underwent inspection before receiving its official acceptance label.
Because many paper labels were discarded during tailoring or deteriorated through service use, surviving examples retaining their original labels are considerably scarcer than standard collar tabs.
This authentic period example features:
The surviving label provides valuable authentication evidence and makes this an excellent reference example for advanced collectors.
The reverse construction displays the characteristics expected of an original RZM-approved SS collar tab. The paper label retains the correct typography, layout, and ink colours associated with wartime Reichszeugmeisterei production. The black wool backing and period attachment method further support originality.
Although the A4/308 manufacturer code confirms authorised production, no definitive documentary evidence currently links this code to a specific named manufacturer. Therefore, it is most accurate to catalogue the tab by its verified RZM designation.
The collar tab remains in very good original condition. The black wool backing is well preserved with only light handling wear. The original RZM paper label remains securely attached, displaying clear printing and legible manufacturer and serial numbers. Minor age toning is entirely consistent with an item produced over eighty years ago.
Original RZM labelled SS collar tabs are among the most sought-after textile insignia produced for the SS. Collectors particularly value examples retaining their original inspection labels because they offer additional provenance and provide direct evidence of official manufacture.
Whether intended for the Allgemeine-SS, SS-VT, or early Waffen-SS, labelled examples are encountered far less frequently than unlabelled tabs and remain desirable additions to advanced collections.
