This German Army Panzer Officer’s Bullion Cap Insignia is an excellent example of high-quality officer’s insignia from the Second World War. Hand embroidered in aluminium bullion wire on its original black wool backing, the insignia comprises the German national eagle above an oak-leaf wreath enclosing the national cockade. The surviving black wool backing strongly supports its attribution to a German Army Panzer officer’s cap.

Unlike the more commonly encountered machine-woven BeVo insignia, this German Army Panzer Officer’s Bullion Cap Insignia displays superior hand craftsmanship with raised padded embroidery and individually worked feather detail. The insignia remains attached to its original section of black cap cloth, preserving important evidence of its wartime construction and use.
The insignia is expertly embroidered using silver-coloured aluminium bullion over a padded foundation. The eagle displays finely detailed wings, breast and tail feathers, while the oak-leaf wreath is individually worked to create excellent depth and definition.
Construction features include:
The irregular edge of the black cloth indicates that the insignia was carefully removed from its original cap rather than manufactured as a separate patch.
The German Army Panzer Officer’s Bullion Cap Insignia was worn on privately purchased officer caps by members of the German Army’s elite armoured forces. Officers frequently acquired superior-quality uniforms and insignia from military outfitters, resulting in finer embroidery and construction than standard issue examples.
The black cloth backing is characteristic of Panzer headgear and distinguishes these insignia from those worn on the field-grey caps of other Heer branches. Although the original cap is no longer present, the surviving backing provides strong evidence for Panzer use.
This German Army Panzer Officer’s Bullion Cap Insignia remains in very good original condition. The bullion embroidery retains excellent detail and attractive age-related patina. The original black wool backing shows expected edge wear from removal from the cap, while the reverse preserves original stitching and period thread. No modern repairs or replacement backing are visible.
The construction and materials are consistent with an original wartime officer-quality insignia. Positive features include the hand-laid aluminium bullion, padded embroidery, original black wool backing, period stitching and natural oxidation. While the complete cap is no longer present, the surviving construction strongly supports originality.
