This Original Third Reich SS RuS-Hauptamt Metal-Embroidered Cuff Title is an exceptionally scarce surviving example of one of the early SS Main Office cuff titles issued to personnel serving within the Rasse- und Siedlungshauptamt (RuS-Hauptamt), or SS Race and Settlement Main Office. Produced before the introduction of the standardised “Reichsführung-SS” cuff title, these departmental cuff titles were worn by members assigned directly to the SS central administrative offices, making them considerably rarer than the more commonly encountered Waffen-SS divisional cuff titles.
This example measures 47 cm in length and weighs 8.7 grams, retaining its original black wool/rayon base with finely executed hand-applied aluminium metal embroidery in Gothic script reading “R.u.S.-Hauptamt”. The reverse retains remnants of its original RZM paper inspection label, an increasingly uncommon survival that enhances both its historical importance and collector desirability.
Unlike the mass-produced woven BeVo examples encountered on many wartime cuff titles, this Original Third Reich SS RuS-Hauptamt Metal-Embroidered Cuff Title is produced using individually applied aluminium flat-wire embroidery secured to the backing by fine couching stitches.
Observed construction characteristics include:
The embroidery displays the crisp definition and proportion expected of documented wartime production, while the reverse construction demonstrates traditional metal-thread embroidery rather than later machine embroidery.
This cuff title has been examined from both the obverse and reverse, together with its physical characteristics.
Observed features supporting period manufacture include:
No obvious characteristics associated with commonly encountered modern reproductions are apparent from the observed construction. As with all Third Reich textile insignia, definitive authentication ultimately requires in-hand examination under magnification, but the visible construction, materials, stitching and surviving RZM label remnants are consistent with an original wartime example.
The Rasse- und Siedlungshauptamt (RuS-Hauptamt) was established in 1931 and became one of the principal administrative offices of the SS. It was responsible for implementing the organisation’s racial and settlement policies, supervising genealogical investigations, approving marriages for SS personnel, overseeing settlement programmes and administering aspects of recruitment based upon racial criteria.
Personnel permanently assigned to the RuS-Hauptamt wore this distinctive cuff title as an identifying insignia upon the lower left sleeve of the black Allgemeine-SS uniform. Departmental cuff titles such as RuS-Hauptamt, SS-Hauptamt, Persönlicher Stab Reichsführer-SS, and SD-Hauptamt were produced in comparatively small numbers because they were issued only to members serving within those headquarters rather than to entire combat formations.
Following the administrative reorganisation of the SS during the early years of the Second World War, many departmental cuff titles were discontinued in favour of the standard “Reichsführung-SS” cuff title, making surviving original examples particularly desirable to advanced collectors and museums.
This Original Third Reich SS RuS-Hauptamt Metal-Embroidered Cuff Title remains in excellent collector condition.
Condition includes:
The surviving RZM label remnants add further originality and provide additional evidence of period manufacture.
Original SS Main Office cuff titles represent one of the most specialised fields within Third Reich cloth insignia collecting. The RuS-Hauptamt cuff title is considerably scarcer than standard Waffen-SS divisional cuff titles because relatively few personnel served within the Race and Settlement Main Office.
Examples retaining:
are seldom encountered on today’s international collectors’ market.
Their rarity ensures continued demand among advanced collectors specialising in Allgemeine-SS insignia, SS administrative offices and museum-quality textile artefacts.
