This original Heer General Feldbinde represents one of the most distinctive uniform accessories worn by general officers of the German Army between the late 1930s and 1945.
Unlike a field-service equipment belt, the Feldbinde formed part of formal military dress. Officers wore it with parade and ceremonial uniforms. The gilt buckle and fittings distinguished the general officer version from the standard silver-coloured Heer officer pattern.
The German Army introduced a carefully regulated system of parade dress during the expansion of the armed forces in the 1930s. The Bundesarchiv guide to the German armed forces from 1933 to 1945 provides wider historical context for the development of the Wehrmacht and its Army branch, the Heer.
The Feldbinde served as a highly visible symbol of commissioned rank and formal military status. Its metallic brocade, coloured stripes and circular buckle complemented the officer’s Waffenrock, decorated field blouse or other authorised parade uniform.
Standard Heer officer belts used a silver-coloured buckle. However, generals received gilt buckles and matching gilt fittings. Therefore, the combination of a gold-finished circular buckle with silver and dark-green brocade identifies this as the general officer version.
The Deutsches Historisches Museum preserves a comparable Heer officer Feldbinde in its collection. The museum records aluminium brocade and aluminium construction, a width of 4.5 cm and manufacture between 1936 and 1945. The present belt matches that regulation width exactly at 45 mm. The circular buckle forms the visual centre of this Heer General Feldbinde. It uses lightweight, multi-part aluminium construction with a rich gold-coloured finish.
A finely detailed Army eagle dominates the central medallion. The eagle faces to its right and holds a wreathed swastika in its talons. Meanwhile, a dense oak-leaf wreath surrounds the entire central design.
The maker rendered the individual oak leaves, acorns, feathers and textured background with considerable precision. Furthermore, the crossed stems at the base remain sharply defined.
The gold finish survives exceptionally well. Light rubbing appears on the highest points and along the outer edge. However, the recessed detail retains a strong and attractive gilt colour.
The surface shows minor marks consistent with careful wear and storage. These marks remain superficial and do not affect the clarity of the design.
The reverse reveals the buckle’s proper period-style construction.
A cylindrical hinge joins the buckle to the rectangular belt frame. A broad metal hook closes against the opposing gilt counter-clasp. The hinge, frame and hook all retain a finish that corresponds with the front.
The close-up photographs show settled oxidation and age toning around the hinge and adjoining surfaces. Moreover, the joints display period-style brazing rather than modern replacement welding.
The rolled outer edge remains even and correctly formed. In addition, the reverse of the central medallion shows the expected impression from the die-struck obverse design.
No casting seam, porous modern surface or newly applied solder appears visible. Consequently, the buckle construction strongly supports original pre-1945 manufacture.
No manufacturer’s mark can be seen in the supplied photographs. Therefore, the buckle should remain catalogued as an unmarked original example rather than attributed to a particular factory.
The belt itself uses tightly woven silver-coloured aluminium brocade. Two parallel dark-green stripes run horizontally through the weave.
These green stripes identify the belt with the Heer. They create a strong contrast against the metallic silver background and remain clearly defined across the visible length.
The brocade displays the dense, regular construction expected from a high-quality officer’s uniform accessory. Light toning and minor flattening appear in places. Nevertheless, the material remains bright and structurally sound.

The dark leather adjustment tongue has multiple paired sizing holes. It remains complete, although age has made the leather dry and brittle.
Pronounced surface cracking surrounds several adjustment holes. The cracks result from long-term shrinkage and natural deterioration of the leather. However, there is no visible evidence of replacement stitching, modern adhesive or recently fitted leather.
The leather tongue should not be flexed, oiled or repeatedly adjusted. Leather dressing could darken the surrounding velvet and brocade. Moreover, further bending may cause the fragile tongue to split.

The complete weight of 108 grams supports the lightweight aluminium construction seen in the photographs. It does not suggest a heavy modern cast-brass reproduction.

The brocade remains bright and well defined. Minor toning, light handling wear and small areas of flattening appear under close examination. However, no major tear or serious loss is visible.
The dark-green backing shows moderate compression and age wear. Even so, it remains firmly attached and substantially complete.
The leather adjustment tongue displays extensive surface cracking. Therefore, it should be treated as fragile. This deterioration affects the practical adjustment of the belt but does not significantly reduce its display quality.
The belt should remain unpolished. Abrasive or chemical cleaning would remove the original gilt finish and established patina.
Original general officer uniform accessories survive in much smaller numbers than standard officer equipment. In addition, many surviving belts have lost their buckles, adjustment fittings or leather tongues.
