This exceptional Alcoso RAD leader dagger is a scarce and highly desirable Reichsarbeitsdienst leader’s edged weapon manufactured by Alcoso – Alexander Coppel, Solingen. Its most striking feature is the unusual orange grip, a recognised and much less frequently encountered colour variation.
Complete with its silvered scabbard and two-strap brown leather RAD leader suspension, the dagger forms an impressive and unusually complete set. The combination of Alcoso manufacture, orange grip scales, strong blade etching and surviving hanger equipment gives this example considerable appeal to the advanced Third Reich edged-weapons collector.
The appropriate specialist catalogue valuation for the complete set is €4,995.
The orange grip scales immediately separate this dagger from the majority of surviving RAD leader examples.
White or ivory-coloured grip plates appear much more frequently. However, original orange grip scales are a recognised variation on RAD leader daggers. Helmut Weitze currently documents a full-size RAD leader dagger with original orange grip scales, while the Lakesidetrader archive records an Alcoso RAD leader miniature with what it describes as rare and desirable orange grip plates.
Importantly, the orange material on this example does not appear to have been surface painted. Its colour and relationship with the fixing screw are consistent across the visible surfaces.
Consequently, the grip is one of the strongest collector features of this particular Alcoso RAD leader dagger.
The reverse ricasso carries the distinctive ALCOSO A.C.S. SOLINGEN trademark incorporating the firm’s scales emblem.
This mark is clearly visible and corresponds with documented period Alcoso RAD leader daggers. Ratisbon’s records comparable original examples with the Alcoso Solingen trademark, aluminium hilt, etched blade and matching RAD suspension equipment.
Alcoso was one of the recognised Solingen manufacturers of Third Reich edged weapons. Therefore, maker-marked RAD leader pieces from this firm remain particularly attractive to collectors who specialise in identifiable manufacturers.
The substantial polished steel blade retains the traditional RAD motto:
“Arbeit adelt”
The inscription translates as “Work ennobles.”
A long central fuller extends through the blade, while the distinctive clipped point gives the weapon its characteristic RAD leader profile.
Darkening remains within the motto and provides strong contrast against the polished blade surface. The letters remain clear and well defined.
Some fine polishing and cleaning marks can be seen under close examination. Nevertheless, the blade retains excellent visual impact, a strong point and clearly identifiable factory markings.
The blade should therefore be described as very good rather than untouched mint condition.
The silvered hilt displays the elaborate construction associated with the RAD leader pattern.
Its upper section terminates in the characteristic stylised eagle-head pommel. Below the orange grip, a ribbed ferrule creates a strong transition into the substantial crossguard.
At the centre of the guard sits the RAD spade emblem incorporating the swastika and wheat motif.
Both guard arms sweep outward before terminating in rounded scroll-shaped ends. Fine age and handling marks remain visible across the silvered surfaces.
Rather than detracting from the piece, this moderate wear provides a coherent appearance when considered alongside the blade, scabbard and hangers.
The matching scabbard is another attractive component of this set.
Silvered metal construction surrounds textured central panels. Large decorative mounts frame the scabbard at both ends, while the suspension rings remain correctly positioned along the upper edge.
The reverse is comparatively plain, as expected, whereas the obverse carries the more elaborate decorative treatment.
Surface marks and areas of natural patination remain visible. However, no major structural damage can be seen in the supplied photographs.
Ratisbon’s records original Alcoso leader daggers with nickel-plated steel scabbards and the same general configuration.
A major advantage of this Alcoso RAD leader dagger is the survival of its complete brown leather suspension assembly.
Two individual brown leather straps terminate in metal snap hooks. Each strap incorporates an adjustable rectangular buckle together with the appropriate metal retaining slide.
At the upper end, both sections connect to the substantial common suspension fitting.
The leather displays attractive age, grain and moderate wear. Stitching remains visible around the folded attachment sections, while the metal fittings show compatible ageing.
Original hangers are frequently separated from RAD leader daggers. Therefore, the survival of the complete two-strap arrangement substantially improves the desirability of the set.
For comparison, Ratisbon’s sold a conventional white-grip Alcoso RAD leader dagger complete with brown leather hanger for €2,675 in September 2025. That example provides a useful base-market reference, although it does not possess the unusual orange grip configuration of the present piece.
A separate enamelled RAD insignia accompanies the dagger as photographed.
Its design incorporates the familiar red RAD spade, swastika, wheat and winged upper element. It creates an attractive display alongside the leader dagger and its suspension equipment.
Because only the front has presently been examined, the badge should be catalogued as an accompanying RAD insigniarather than assigned to a particular manufacturer without inspection of its reverse.
A photograph of the reverse would allow its pin system, maker marks and construction to be assessed separately.
The Reichsarbeitsdienst, usually abbreviated to RAD, developed into a major organisation within National Socialist Germany.
Compulsory labour service became formalised during the 1930s. By 1935 the organisation numbered around 200,000 members, while its strength had increased substantially by the beginning of the Second World War. The Deutsches Historisches Museum records the RAD’s organisation into Arbeitsgaue, Gruppen and Abteilungen and documents its wider role within the National Socialist state.
Uniforms, rank insignia and edged weapons helped create the RAD’s strongly regimented visual identity.
Leader daggers represented rank and status rather than ordinary working tools. Elaborate silvered fittings, organisational symbolism and decorative blades consequently distinguished them from the heavier enlisted and subordinate RAD hewers.

Construction details visible in the supplied photographs are consistent with an original period Alcoso RAD leader dagger.
The Alcoso trademark presents correctly. Blade geometry corresponds with documented examples, while the RAD guard, eagle-head pommel, scabbard construction and suspension system follow known period configurations. Ratisbon’s provides a particularly useful comparison with an authenticated Alcoso example complete with its original hanger.
Furthermore, orange grip material is documented on genuine RAD leader pieces. Weitze currently lists a full-size orange-grip RAD leader dagger, and Alcoso’s use of orange grip material is independently documented on surviving RAD leader miniatures.
Taken collectively, these characteristics provide a strong and coherent case for period originality.
The dagger remains in very good collector condition.
Orange grip plates are especially attractive and show no obvious major losses in the photographs. Silvered hilt surfaces display appropriate age and handling marks.
Likewise, the blade retains a strong motto and clear Alcoso trademark. Historical polishing is visible, so the blade is not represented as untouched.
The scabbard shows normal surface wear and patination but remains visually impressive. Meanwhile, the brown leather hanger assembly displays age consistent with period use and storage.
Overall presentation is excellent.
Several features elevate this example above the standard RAD leader dagger.
Foremost among them is the scarce orange grip variation. Alcoso manufacture adds further collector interest, while the surviving complete suspension greatly improves the set.
In addition, the blade retains both its motto and easily identifiable maker mark.
Finding all these characteristics together is substantially more difficult than locating an ordinary white-grip example without hangers.
As a result, this is a piece suited to an advanced collection of RAD militaria, Solingen edged weapons or high-grade Third Reich daggers.
That figure reflects its rarity and completeness rather than treating it as an ordinary RAD leader dagger.
The dagger, scabbard, hangers and insignia are attractively presented in the fitted wooden display case shown in the photographs.
The case greatly enhances exhibition and storage. However, it is not represented as an original RAD-issued presentation case and does not form the basis of the €4,995 valuation.
