Original NSDAP Gauleitung Visor Cap – Deluxe White Summer Political Leader Cap

This original NSDAP Gauleitung visor cap is an exceptionally scarce white summer-pattern Political Leader cap dating from the Third Reich period. Its distinctive combination of white cloth, red Gauleitung piping, brown velvet centre band and gilt insignia creates one of the most visually striking forms of NSDAP political headgear.

Unlike the standard brown Political Leader cap, this example uses a finely napped white crown intended for warm-weather and summer wear. Moreover, the high saddle shape remains remarkably well preserved.

Red piping identifies service within the Gauleitung, the regional level of the NSDAP administrative structure. Importantly, this colour does not automatically identify the wearer as a Gauleiter. Numerous Political Leaders served on Gau staffs while holding different political ranks.

A particularly desirable feature is the elaborate gold metallic-thread oak-leaf wreath surrounding the enamelled national cockade. This superior private-purchase workmanship elevates the cap well above many standard examples.

White Summer Crown and Gauleitung Piping

The crown uses high-quality white cloth formed into an elegant saddle profile. Although light age marks remain visible, the material retains an exceptionally attractive appearance.

Bright red piping follows the outer crown and also borders the brown velvet centre band. Consequently, the cap immediately displays its Gau-level association.

Period Political Leader regulations used colour-coded piping to distinguish administrative levels. Under the later system, light blue represented Ortsgruppenleitung, white represented Kreisleitung, dark red identified Gauleitung and golden yellow indicated Reichsleitung.

Interestingly, published references describe the final standard white M39 summer cap without piping around the crown. This example retains full crown piping. Therefore, it is more carefully catalogued as a deluxe or transitional/private-purchase white summer Gauleitung configuration rather than claiming an absolutely textbook regulation M39 construction.

That distinction adds considerable research interest to the cap.

Gilt Political Leader Eagle

A large gilt political eagle sits centrally on the front seam.

Excellent feather definition remains visible throughout the wings and body. Furthermore, much of the original gold finish survives around the recessed details.

Natural toning has developed across the surface. Raised areas show modest wear, while protected sections retain a richer gilt colour.

The eagle displays the quality expected from Political Leader insignia intended for a high-grade visor cap.

Deluxe Metallic-Thread Oak-Leaf Wreath

Perhaps the outstanding feature of this NSDAP Gauleitung visor cap is its elaborate gold metallic-thread oak-leaf wreath.

Individual leaves consist of carefully formed metallic material arranged around the central cockade. The resulting three-dimensional effect provides considerably greater visual depth than the standard stamped-metal wreath.

A multi-part national cockade sits at the centre. Red, silver and black elements surround the central emblem, producing the characteristic Political Leader design.

Comparable deluxe Political Leader caps with hand-worked metallic wreaths are exceptionally scarce. Helmut Weitze records such deluxe constructions as unusual private-purchase variants and notes the rarity of complete surviving examples.

Importantly, the elaborate wreath indicates construction quality rather than a specific political rank.

Brown Velvet Band

The centre band consists of rich brown velvet.

Its nap displays natural compression from age and handling. Nevertheless, the material remains strong and provides an attractive contrast against the white crown.

Red piping runs above and below the velvet. Consequently, the Gauleitung colour remains clearly visible from every viewing angle.

The combination of velvet, metallic insignia and white cloth gives this cap an especially luxurious appearance.

Gold Political Leader Chin Cord

A double gold-coloured metallic cord runs above the visor.

Decades of oxidation have darkened much of its exposed surface. However, the woven construction and original knotted sliders remain clearly visible.

Matching side buttons secure the cord. Both the cord and its fittings display compatible ageing.

Rather than polishing these components, the existing patina should remain untouched. Cleaning could remove surviving original finish and reduce historical integrity.

Brown Visor

The visor has the correct brown finish associated with NSDAP Political Leader headgear.

Its upper surface remains glossy, although fine scratches and minor pressure marks show normal use and storage. Likewise, the underside displays the expected unfinished or less highly finished construction.

A curved profile gives the cap its distinctive period silhouette.

Original brown visors form an important identification point because Political Leader caps differed visually from many contemporary military visor caps.

Original Interior

Opening the cap reveals a gold to tan rayon lining.

The material shows natural creasing, light staining and age-related discolouration. These characteristics correspond well with the overall condition of the exterior.

A stitched diamond outline survives in the crown. The original transparent celluloid sweat shield has deteriorated or disappeared, leaving the original stitching and remnants behind.

Such losses commonly occur because early transparent plastics shrink, harden and become brittle with age.

The leather sweatband remains present around the circumference. Considerable honest wear appears toward the forehead area, where repeated contact naturally affected the leather.

Drying and partial deterioration can also be seen. Nevertheless, the sweatband remains an important original component and should not be replaced.

Original RZM Tuchmütze Label

Beneath the sweatband survives one of the most important features of the cap: its original RZM cloth control label.

The brown label bears the designation:

TUCHMÜTZE

It also carries the circular RZM emblem and printed regulatory information concerning Reichszeugmeisterei-controlled manufacture.

The large numbered field clearly reads:

131817

Meanwhile, the manufacturer field has suffered wear and cannot presently support a reliable maker attribution.

Therefore, no manufacturer should be claimed unless further evidence becomes available.

The label displays convincing contact wear where it has rested beneath the sweatband for decades. Its ageing also corresponds with the surrounding leather and lining.

The RZM System

The Reichszeugmeisterei der NSDAP, generally abbreviated RZM, regulated the production and distribution of Party uniforms, insignia and equipment.

Licensed manufacturers had to follow approved specifications. In addition, controlled articles frequently carried RZM markings or labels.

The surviving Tuchmütze label consequently represents an important feature of this cap rather than merely a decorative maker’s mark.

The printed label also references regulations from 20 December 1934 and 16 January 1935, linking its design to the developing RZM control system of the mid-1930s.

Historical Background

Political Leaders formed the NSDAP’s uniformed administrative apparatus.

Their organisation operated through four main geographical levels: Ortsgruppenleitung, Kreisleitung, Gauleitung and Reichsleitung.

A Gau covered a large regional administrative area. Gau-level officials supervised subordinate Party organisations and participated in propaganda, mobilisation and political administration.

The 1943 Organisationsbuch der NSDAP illustrates Political Leader visor caps and confirms the use of colour-coded piping for these different administrative levels. It also illustrates a white Political Leader cap for summer wear.

For historical study, the surviving period volume provides an especially useful primary reference.

Authenticity Assessment

The supplied photographs show numerous features consistent with period Political Leader headgear.

Supporting characteristics include the aged white cloth, correct brown velvet band, red Gauleitung piping, brown visor and elaborate gilt insignia.

Furthermore, the interior displays compatible wear across the lining, sweatband and RZM label.

The numbered Tuchmütze control label adds another important period feature. Its staining and abrasion appear naturally integrated with the surrounding materials.

No single feature proves authenticity by itself. Instead, the combination of construction, materials, wear patterns and surviving markings provides the strongest assessment.

Based upon the photographs, this cap presents as a strong original-period NSDAP Political Leader visor cap.

For absolute certification, an in-hand inspection should still examine the eagle prongs, wreath attachment, protected piping, internal seams and concealed sections beneath the sweatband.

Condition

Overall condition is very good for this extremely scarce type.

The white crown retains excellent shape with only light surface marks and mild age discolouration. Meanwhile, the red piping remains vivid and substantially complete.

Brown velvet retains strong colour with normal compression. Both major pieces of front insignia remain particularly impressive.

The enamelled cockade appears complete. Additionally, the gilt eagle retains substantial original finish.

Age has darkened the metallic chin cord considerably. The interior shows stronger wear, particularly around the sweatband and former celluloid shield.

These imperfections should be viewed as part of the object’s history rather than cosmetically corrected.

Collector Importance

White summer Political Leader visor caps survive in substantially smaller numbers than standard brown examples.

Gauleitung examples add another level of scarcity. Furthermore, the deluxe wreath, original RZM label and strong exterior condition make this cap especially desirable.

For comparison, Ratisbon’s sold a white Political Leader summer cap at €3,200 hammer in 2024, while another listing records the result including premium at €3,985.

Current specialist-market examples of Gauleitung Political Leader caps also sit within the several-thousand-euro bracket. Helmut Weitze recently offered a conventional Gauleitung example at €3,300.

Given the white summer construction, deluxe insignia and surviving RZM label, the present €4,000 retail price is appropriate.
