SS Reichsführung Staff Visor Cap

This SS Reichsführung Staff Visor Cap represents a substantially rarer variation of field-grey SS service headgear.

At first glance, its field-grey crown, black centre band, leather chinstrap and silvered SS insignia resemble a conventional SS-Verfügungstruppe or early Waffen-SS EM/NCO Schirmmütze.

However, the piping materially changes the attribution.

Rather than regulation white, the cord is visibly light grey throughout the surviving circumference.

Period regulations reproduced in Andrew Mollo’s Uniforms of the SS specifically state that personnel assigned to the SS-Hauptämter at Reich level were to wear light-grey piping.

Consequently, this cap should be presented as a Reich-level SS staff cap, associated organisationally with the Reichsführung-SS and Heinrich Himmler’s central command apparatus.

Light-Grey Reich-Level Staff Piping

The close-up photographs are particularly important.

Protected and exposed sections of the piping show a consistent muted grey colour rather than merely isolated dirt staining.

Furthermore, the piping differs visibly from the aged cream-white piping seen on standard SS caps.

A conventional early SS-VT EM/NCO visor documented by Ratisbon’s uses white piping, field-grey cloth, black centre band and a black leather chinstrap. That makes an excellent comparison for understanding what is different about the present example.

Your cap instead displays the specialist light-grey colour described for personnel of Reich-level SS-Hauptämter.

For catalogue purposes I would describe it as:

Original light-grey Reichsführung-SS / SS-Hauptamt staff piping.

I would not describe it as faded white.

Himmler Staff Association

Heinrich Himmler, as Reichsführer-SS, presided over the central SS command structure and its principal offices.

Therefore, collectors often refer to this unusual light-grey configuration as “Himmler staff” piping.

That terminology is useful commercially, but the historically safest description is:

Reichsführung-SS / Reich-level SS-Hauptamt staff.

The distinction prevents the listing from claiming that the wearer necessarily worked inside Himmler’s immediate Persönlicher Stab.

EM/NCO Configuration

The surviving chinstrap establishes the wearer category.

A black leather strap crosses the front and retains its rectangular adjustment buckle. This configuration was characteristic of enlisted men and NCOs rather than commissioned officers, who normally used metallic cap cords.

Ratisbon’s documented early SS-VT enlisted/NCO cap displays the same fundamental leather-strap construction.

Consequently, the present cap is best described as a:

Mannschaften / Unterführer Reichsführung-SS staff Schirmmütze.

That combination of enlisted/NCO construction with specialist central-staff piping adds considerably to its rarity.

Field-Grey Crown

Fine field-grey wool forms the upper body.

The cloth has retained a subdued green-grey appearance, while the diagonal weave remains clearly visible under magnification.

Several small moth holes and isolated cloth losses appear across the crown.

Nevertheless, these imperfections remain consistent with genuine prolonged storage and period use rather than artificially induced ageing.

The crown still retains an attractive original profile.

Black Centre Band

A deep black wool centre band surrounds the lower body of the cap.

Its colour remains strong despite considerable age.

The contrast between field-grey crown, black band and unusual light-grey piping produces the distinctive appearance associated with this special staff configuration.

Minor fibres and age debris remain visible on the black material.

Again, nothing should be brushed aggressively or chemically treated.

SS Eagle

The field-grey front carries a silver-coloured metal SS eagle.

Natural patination has produced a mixture of silver-grey and warmer brown tones across the raised and recessed surfaces.

This ageing appears entirely appropriate visually.

However, SS cap insignia are extensively reproduced.

Therefore, I would still photograph the reverse, attachment pins and any RZM/manufacturer marks before assigning a specific maker.

For the catalogue use:

Original-style silvered SS national eagle, maker presently unidentified.

Totenkopf

The centre band carries the familiar silvered SS Totenkopf.

Its pierced eyes, triangular nasal opening, defined teeth and crossbones remain clearly visible.

Natural scratches, oxidation and finish loss occur across the surface.

Importantly, the patina does not look freshly manufactured or artificially blackened from the front.

Nevertheless, reverse inspection remains advisable before offering a categorical maker attribution.

The correct catalogue wording is:

Silvered metal SS Totenkopf with substantial period-style patination.

The RZM “SS Dienstmütze” Label

The interior is particularly significant.

Beneath the sweatband survives a faded pale blue-green control label.

Your photographs appear to preserve part of the wording:

“…Dienst Mütze…”

This is highly compatible with the large SS/RZM “SS Dienstmütze” label documented on recognised original SS caps.

Weitze currently illustrates an original circa-1936 SS enlisted/NCO cap retaining a large label beneath the sweatband reading “SS Dienstmütze”, together with the manufacturer’s field.

Another named original documented by Weitze has a label recording the manufacturer and the wearer’s SS membership number, demonstrating the type of information originally carried on these labels.

Accordingly, the correct description for your cap is:

Surviving SS/RZM Dienstmütze control label beneath the sweatband, substantially faded but with portions of the Dienstmütze wording still discernible.

I would not invent a maker number or SS number from the remaining faint printing.

Interior Construction

The interior displays considerable age.

A tan-brown textile lining remains present, with obvious staining and darkening from use and storage.

Rows of original-style stitching remain visible around the interior.

Likewise, the leather sweatband survives, although age has caused discolouration, stiffness and surface deterioration.

Remnants of the original transparent celluloid sweat shield can still be identified.

This naturally aged interior is a positive feature and should not be restored cosmetically.

SS/RZM Comparison

The interior control system closely follows known surviving SS headgear.

Weitze’s current enlisted/NCO Allgemeine-SS / SS-VT visor includes a woven SS/RZM label stating “Vom Reichsführer SS befohlene Ausführung”, a large “SS Dienstmütze” label beneath the sweatband and an SS/RZM stamp inside the visor. That cap is currently priced at €8,500.

Likewise, Militaria Plaza documents an early field-grey SS-VT/Waffen-SS EM/NCO visor retaining an SS-Dienstmütze RZM label beneath the sweatband. That complete cap previously sold at €8,250.

Those examples provide strong construction comparisons for your interior label.

Dating

The coloured-piping regulations are particularly useful when dating this cap.

The SS briefly permitted branch and specialist Waffenfarbe piping on field-grey caps during 1940. Period regulations reproduced by Mollo specifically include light grey for personnel of the SS-Hauptämter at Reich level.

By the end of 1940 the system was substantially standardised again, which is why genuine coloured-piped Waffen-SS visor caps are comparatively scarce.

Weitze specifically notes that non-white Waffen-SS piping is extremely rare and that white was subsequently prescribed for the various branches after 31 December 1940.

Therefore, I would date this example:

circa 1940

That is a much stronger catalogue dating than a broad 1939–45 description.

Authentication Assessment

On the available photographic evidence, this SS Reichsführung Staff Visor Cap presents very positively as a period piece.

The field-grey wool body, black centre band, leather EM/NCO chinstrap, specialist light-grey piping and aged interior form a coherent construction.

Furthermore, the surviving SS/RZM Dienstmütze label is an important authentication feature because directly comparable labels are documented on recognised original SS caps.

The main point requiring physical confirmation is the piping.

Inspection should establish that the light-grey cord disappears correctly into the original construction seams and has not been replaced post-war.

If that test is passed, I would catalogue the cap confidently as:

Original circa-1940 Reichsführung-SS / Reich-level SS-Hauptamt EM/NCO visor cap with light-grey staff piping.

Condition

Overall condition is good, heavily age-worn original condition.

The field-grey wool retains a strong period appearance but shows scattered moth damage.

Light-grey piping remains substantially intact.

Meanwhile, the black centre band has survived particularly well.

The leather chinstrap retains its original-looking form while showing age cracking, edge wear and surface loss.

Both metal insignia display heavy patination.

Inside, the lining, sweatband, celluloid remains and RZM label all show extensive age.

Nothing should be cleaned, repaired or replaced.

For an item of this rarity, preservation of the present condition is preferable to cosmetic restoration.

Collector Importance

An ordinary Waffen-SS enlisted/NCO Schirmmütze is already a difficult piece of headgear to acquire.

A genuine example retaining coloured staff piping is significantly scarcer.

Weitze currently asks €16,500 for an original pink-piped Waffen-SS armoured officer visor and explicitly notes that Waffen-SS caps with branch colours other than white are extremely rare.

The present example has a different rank category and condition, so that price should not be treated as a direct valuation.

Nevertheless, it demonstrates the considerable premium associated with verified coloured-piping SS headgear.
