Original Assmann Wehrmacht 24 mm Pebbled Uniform Buttons – “Hochfeine Qualität”

Original Assmann Wehrmacht 24 mm Uniform Buttons

This matching group of three original Assmann Wehrmacht 24 mm Uniform Buttons displays the classic plain pebbled or gekörnt surface used on German military uniforms during the Reichswehr and Third Reich periods.

The fronts retain an attractive silver-coloured finish with exceptionally fine, evenly struck pebbling. More importantly, the backs carry the distinctive “HOCHFEINE QUALITÄT” marking together with the stylised Assmann “A” and 24 Msize designation.

That combination is significant. The stylised A is documented as a maker mark of F. W. Assmann & Söhne of Lüdenscheid, while other surviving Assmann buttons are recorded with the same HOCHFEINE QUALITÄT 24Mconfiguration. Buttonarium identifies this stylised-A marking directly with Assmann.

F. W. Assmann & Söhne, Lüdenscheid

F. W. Assmann & Söhne was one of Germany’s major manufacturers of uniform fittings. The company produced buttons, insignia, buckles and related metal accessories for military and governmental organisations.

Buttonarium records Assmann-manufactured German military buttons dating approximately 1928–1945, including plain pebbled patterns carrying the stylised A maker device. The reference also notes that these buttons were commonly manufactured from aluminium, zinc and other metals depending upon production period and intended use.

The inscription HOCHFEINE QUALITÄT, literally “high/fine quality”, denoted one of the firm’s better-quality commercial constructions.

Correct “24 M” Marking

The reverse marking appears to include:

HOCHFEINE [stylised A] QUALITÄT – 24 M

The 24 M marking corresponds to an approximately 24 mm button size. Assmann used the same marking format on numerous military, governmental and naval buttons.

A documented Assmann railway button of exactly 24 mm has the identical HOCHFEINE [stylised A] QUALITÄT 24M reverse format, confirming the meaning of the size and maker combination.

Therefore, assuming direct measurement confirms approximately 24 mm, I would catalogue these as:

Assmann 24 mm silver-coloured pebbled military uniform buttons, “Hochfeine Qualität,” pre-1945.

Wehrmacht Uniform Application

Plain pebbled buttons became a standard feature of German military clothing.

The smaller approximately 19 mm type is well documented on field tunics and shoulder straps. Larger examples around 24 mm were suited to heavier uniform garments and coat-type applications.

Current specialist references document 24 mm German military buttons extensively, while comparable uniform buttons marked Hochfeine Qualität remain recognised original period fittings.

Because these examples carry no visible RZM marking or organisation-specific emblem, I would not attribute them to the SS, SA or NSDAP.

Likewise, I would avoid claiming a specific Heer or Luftwaffe formation without accompanying provenance. The safest description is Wehrmacht/German military 24 mm uniform buttons.

High-Quality Multi-Piece Construction

The reverse photographs are particularly convincing.

Each button uses a separate rear plate enclosed within the rolled edge of the silver-coloured front shell. A substantial wire sewing loop sits within a radiating reinforced centre.

The construction shows several desirable period characteristics:

  • finely struck pebbled face;
  • separate front and rear components;
  • rolled circumference;
  • substantial period wire shank;
  • radial pressed reinforcement;
  • HOCHFEINE QUALITÄT lettering;
  • stylised Assmann A;
  • 24 M size marking;
  • natural variation in surface oxidation.

The bright brass/gold-toned reverse sections contrast naturally with the silver-coloured outer shell, exactly as expected with multi-metal construction.

Authentication Assessment

These buttons compare very favourably with documented Assmann products.

I see no obvious casting seams, modern soldering, newly formed loops or artificial ageing. Instead, the wear is concentrated naturally around exposed edges and attachment points.

The reverse lettering is also struck into the metal rather than crudely cast.

Why the Assmann Marking Matters

Assmann markings are useful because the company produced a broad range of original military fittings during the period.

Buttonarium identifies the stylised A specifically as Assmann and records plain pebbled German military buttons from approximately 1928–1945.

Furthermore, surviving 24M HOCHFEINE QUALITÄT examples demonstrate that the same reverse dies were used across different Assmann uniform-button contracts.

This makes the reverse marking considerably more useful for authentication than the otherwise relatively generic pebbled front.

Condition

The three Assmann Wehrmacht 24 mm Uniform Buttons remain in very good original condition.

The fine surface texture remains particularly sharp, while most of the silver-coloured finish survives. Natural darkening is visible around the edges and within recessed portions of the pebbling.

The backs retain strong maker and quality markings.

No restoration is recommended. In particular, avoid polishing the surfaces because this could remove original plating and reduce collector value.

Collector Interest

Plain Wehrmacht buttons are normally inexpensive individually. However, a matching trio with clearly readable Assmann “Hochfeine Qualität 24M” markings is more attractive as a reference or restoration group.

They are particularly useful for collectors studying original Wehrmacht tailoring, because Assmann’s reverse construction can be compared directly with buttons still attached to period uniforms.
