This original Daisy Panzer Assault Badge represents the bronze grade of the German Panzerkampfabzeichen. Collectors use the “Daisy” name because a small flower appears prominently beneath the tank tracks. This distinctive detail separates the variant from other unmarked Panzer Assault Badge dies.
The manufacturer produced this badge from die-struck zinc with a semi-hollow reverse. Its obverse displays a stylised tank crossing broken ground within an oval oak-leaf wreath. A national eagle and swastika dominate the upper section.
Fine details remain visible across the tank, tracks, wreath and eagle despite extensive service wear. Most of the original bronze finish has faded or absorbed into the zinc, leaving a dark and naturally aged surface. Nevertheless, traces of warmer bronze toning remain within protected recesses.
The reverse carries a vertical pin, barrel hinge and round-wire catch. A substantial area of aged solder surrounds the catch base. Similar soldered catch construction appears on recognised examples, although an in-hand examination should confirm whether the catch remains factory attached or received an early repair.
No manufacturer’s mark appears on the reverse. Researchers have not conclusively identified the company responsible for the Daisy Panzer Assault Badge, so the listing should retain the accepted “unknown manufacturer” attribution.
Collectors can compare this example with other original German combat badges and awards or examine the related FLL Infantry Assault Badge in Silver in the Nordmenn collection.
Generaloberst Walther von Brauchitsch instituted the silver Panzer Assault Badge on 20 December 1939. The award initially recognised tank crews who participated actively in three armoured assaults on three separate days.
The Army introduced the bronze grade on 1 June 1940. This version primarily recognised personnel serving with motorised infantry, motorcycle rifle, armoured reconnaissance and supporting formations attached to Panzer divisions.
A recipient normally needed to participate in three armoured assaults on separate days. Commanders could also consider wounds or exceptional conduct under combat conditions when recommending the award.
The bronze grade differs from the silver tank-crew badge principally through its finish and qualifying branches. However, both grades share the same basic tank, wreath and eagle composition.
Several photographed characteristics correspond with documented Daisy examples:
The specialist Grenadier Militaria Daisy example uses the same semi-hollow zinc format, unmarked reverse, barrel hinge and wire catch. In addition, the Ratisbon’s Daisy archive records an unmarked semi-hollow bronze example. The Wehrmacht Awards variant study also identifies the flower beneath the tracks as the defining Daisy feature.
These comparisons strongly support period manufacture. However, the heavy solder around the catch deserves careful examination under magnification before an unconditional originality and unrepaired-condition guarantee accompanies the sale.
This Daisy Panzer Assault Badge remains complete with its pin, hinge and catch. Heavy service wear and oxidation have darkened the zinc body, while only limited traces of the original bronze finish survive.
Surface wear has softened some of the smallest details. Even so, the tank, eagle, swastika, wreath and characteristic daisy remain clearly identifiable. The dark patina should remain untouched, as cleaning could remove surviving finish and reduce collector value.
Overall, this worn Daisy Panzer Assault Badge offers strong historical character and represents a recognised, collectable variation of the bronze Panzerkampfabzeichen.
