The badge features a finely die-struck gilt bronze construction with the distinctive “TN” monogram set inside a cogwheel. The design sits on a vibrant red and white vitreous enamel background and incorporates the organisation’s black enamel emblem. A national eagle surmounts the badge, while the lower scroll carries the date 1939, marking its wartime issue.
The reverse is stamped GES. GESCH. (Gesetzlich Geschützt – legally protected) and bears the individual membership number 2566. The original vertical pin remains in place and carries the engraved maker’s mark, “Wilhelm Fühner, Pforzheim.” Fühner earned an excellent reputation for producing high-quality TeNo insignia, and collectors continue to value his work for its exceptional finish and craftsmanship.
Engineer Otto Lummitzsch founded the Technische Nothilfe (Technical Emergency Service) on 30 September 1919. The organisation protected Germany’s essential infrastructure during strikes, emergencies and natural disasters. It maintained power stations, water supplies, railways and communications networks when normal services failed.
The organisation expanded rapidly after 1933. During the Second World War, TeNo units repaired bomb damage, restored bridges and railway lines, and returned factories and utilities to operation. Their work supported both civilian communities and the German war economy. In 1941, the organisation became part of the Ordnungspolizei (Order Police) while continuing its specialised engineering role.
Membership remained relatively limited compared with many political organisations of the period. As a result, original numbered TeNo badges are significantly scarcer than many contemporary Third Reich awards and insignia. Examples produced by Wilhelm Fühner are especially sought after for their quality and historical importance.
This original TeNo membership badge combines rarity, historical significance and outstanding quality. It is an excellent example for collectors specialising in Third Reich civil organisations, technical services or German insignia.
