The substantial size of this vehicle pennant, together with its complete original mounting staff and official RZM M3/8marked fittings, indicates that it was intended for use on a senior Allgemeine-SS staff vehicle rather than an ordinary unit motorcycle or lower-ranking official’s car. Pennants of this quality and scale were typically reserved for command and administrative vehicles attached to Standarte headquarters.

The designation “I./82” identifies the I. Sturmbann of the 82. SS-Standarte, headquartered in Bielefeld. The RZM M3/8 manufacturer’s marking places production within the period when the Reichszeugmeisterei controlled the manufacture of official SS equipment, making a production date in the mid-1930s highly likely.

Historical records show that SS-Obersturmbannführer Helmut Mattke assumed command of the 82. SS-Standarte on 7 May 1934, succeeding Alfred Buchs, and remained one of its principal commanding officers during the period in which this pennant was most likely manufactured and issued. While it is not possible to prove that this exact pennant was mounted on Mattke’s personal staff car, the dating, unit designation and senior-command style of the pennant make such an association entirely plausible. As a result, this example represents a rare and significant surviving artefact that may well have accompanied the command vehicle of one of the Standarte’s senior officers during the formative years of the Allgemeine-SS.
