An exceptional original Cloth German Cross in Gold (Deutsches Kreuz in Gold), executed in the classic eight-pointed embroidered design and measuring an impressive 74mm in diameter. This oversized example is significantly larger than the standard 70mm pattern and represents a scarce private-purchase variation that is highly sought after by collectors of original Second World War German combat insignia.
The award is beautifully embroidered on field-grey wool backing, a material frequently associated with privately tailored combat uniforms. The finely executed silver-grey star surrounds a richly embroidered gilt oakleaf wreath enclosing the black swastika on a tan cloth roundel, all framed by the correct red embroidered ring. A twisted silver bullion cord separates the wreath from the star and creates exceptional depth, contrast and visual appeal.
The reverse retains its original black backing together with all four original brass attachment prongs, confirming that the badge was designed to be mounted directly through the tunic rather than permanently sewn in place.
Collectors rarely encounter cloth German Crosses of this quality, especially examples displaying the desirable oversized 74mm construction.
The German Cross in Gold was instituted on 28 September 1941 to recognise repeated acts of bravery or exceptional military leadership that exceeded the requirements for the Iron Cross First Class but did not yet merit the award of the Knight’s Cross of the Iron Cross.
The decoration quickly became one of Germany’s most prestigious wartime awards. Members of the Heer, Luftwaffe, Kriegsmarine and Waffen-SS all received the German Cross in Gold.
Although the standard award was manufactured in metal, many officers privately purchased embroidered cloth versions for wear on tailored field uniforms. These lighter badges offered greater comfort while maintaining a smart military appearance.
One of the most significant features of this example is its 74mm diameter.
Most surviving cloth German Crosses measure approximately 70mm. Oversized examples are encountered far less frequently and are generally associated with private military tailors rather than official depot production.
These larger badges were produced in limited numbers and remain among the most desirable variants for advanced collectors. Their distinctive size immediately sets them apart from standard production examples.
The field-grey backing closely resembles wool used on privately tailored Waffen-SS combat uniforms.
While no surviving documentation allows this badge to be conclusively attributed to the Waffen-SS, its construction, backing material, dimensions and overall appearance closely match documented examples associated with privately tailored Waffen-SS uniforms.
Private tailoring was common among officers of both the Heer and Waffen-SS. Consequently, the badge should be described as likely Waffen-SS issue, rather than definitively attributed. This careful approach reflects current collector scholarship and enhances confidence in the piece.
This original Cloth German Cross in Gold displays the outstanding workmanship expected from high-quality wartime embroidery.
This example remains in very good original condition.
The embroidery is crisp and sharply defined throughout. The silver-grey star, gilt wreath and red centre retain excellent colour and definition. The bullion separator cord remains complete and undamaged.
The reverse displays honest age and light service wear consistent with wartime use. The original black backing remains intact, while all four brass attachment prongs are present and secure.
The badge has never been restored or repaired and presents exactly as experienced collectors expect from an authentic wartime example.
The Original Cloth German Cross in Gold ranks among the most desirable embroidered combat awards of the Second World War.
Oversized 74mm examples are considerably scarcer than standard 70mm badges. Their probable private-tailor manufacture, combined with their distinctive field-grey backing and original brass mounting prongs, makes them highly desirable additions to advanced collections of German combat insignia.
Few surviving examples combine oversized dimensions, excellent embroidery, honest period wear and complete originality as successfully as this badge.
