An original Early SS breast eagle (SS Hoheitsabzeichen), embroidered in silver-grey rayon thread on a black wool backing and believed to date from the pre-war Allgemeine-SS period, circa 1935–1940. This attractive insignia displays the elegant proportions associated with early SS production and remains a desirable example of original Third Reich uniform insignia.
The eagle features finely machine-embroidered wings with crisp feather detail, a well-defined eagle’s head, and the characteristic suspended wreath enclosing the swastika. Its slim profile differs from many later wartime patterns and closely reflects the early style worn on the black Allgemeine-SS service tunic before wartime production changes became widespread.
Furthermore, the insignia retains its original black wool backing, while the embroidery exhibits honest age, light wear, and natural toning consistent with an authentic period example. The hand-cut outline also reflects original wartime manufacture rather than modern machine-cut reproduction methods.
The Early SS breast eagle became one of the principal symbols worn by members of the Allgemeine-SS during the mid-1930s. Positioned above the right breast pocket, it identified the wearer as a member of the SS while complementing the famous black service uniform introduced during the organisation’s rapid expansion.
As the SS evolved into both a political organisation and military force, the breast eagle underwent several manufacturing and design changes. Consequently, collectors often regard these early embroidered examples as among the most attractive and historically significant variations.
This example demonstrates many of the features expected from an early period-produced insignia, including:
Together, these characteristics make the insignia particularly appealing to collectors of original SS uniforms and insignia.
Original Early SS breast eagles have become increasingly difficult to obtain, particularly examples retaining strong embroidery and untouched period construction. Because many surviving examples were removed from uniforms after the Second World War, authentic loose insignia continue to attract strong collector interest.
Moreover, the elegant pre-war design and association with the Allgemeine-SS ensure continued demand among advanced collectors of German militaria.
The eagle remains in good original condition with attractive period ageing. The embroidery retains excellent overall definition, while the black wool backing remains intact. Light wear and minor age-related imperfections are entirely consistent with an original insignia approaching ninety years of age.
