An original 1939 Silver Wound Badge (Verwundetenabzeichen in Silber), manufactured by the desirable maker Rudolf Wächtler & Lange, Mittweida, bearing the LDO maker code L/55 on the reverse. This example is accompanied by its original LDO issue packet, adding further collector appeal.
The Silver Wound Badge was instituted by Adolf Hitler on 1 September 1939 and was awarded to members of the Wehrmacht, Waffen-SS and other eligible personnel who had been wounded in action three or four times, or who sustained more serious combat injuries. It was one of the most recognised combat awards of the Second World War.
The obverse displays the classic steel helmet with swastika over crossed swords, surrounded by an oval laurel wreath. The reverse retains its original hinge, pin and catch assembly and is clearly stamped L/55, identifying the manufacturer as Rudolf Wächtler & Lange of Mittweida, one of the authorised LDO producers of German military awards.
This badge exhibits honest age-related wear and patina consistent with its age while retaining crisp detail throughout. The accompanying original LDO packet is an excellent addition and enhances both the historical interest and collectability of the set.
Please study the photographs carefully, as they form part of the description.
The Silver Wound Badge is one of the core combat awards of the Second World War and remains an essential addition to any Wehrmacht or Third Reich awards collection. Maker-marked examples from Rudolf Wächtler & Lange (L/55) are especially desirable, and examples accompanied by their original LDO retail packet are encountered far less frequently than loose badges. The combination of a sought-after maker, complete hardware and original packet makes this an excellent collector’s example.
