An original Luftwaffe Officer’s Cape Closure (Spanier) comprising both matching eagle-head clasps, the original connecting chain and both reverse attachment plates. This elegant ceremonial accessory was privately purchased by Luftwaffe officers for wear with the formal dress cape and is now one of the scarcer surviving pieces of original Luftwaffe uniform equipment.
Each circular clasp features the distinctive Luftwaffe eagle’s head in high relief against a finely pebbled background. The finely detailed feathers, sharply defined eye and well-modelled beak demonstrate the quality expected from wartime German military outfitters.
The matching eagle heads remain connected by their original heavy aluminium chain, allowing the cape to fasten exactly as intended. The reverse of each clasp retains its original three-prong attachment plate, confirming that this is a complete and unaltered set.
The silvered finish displays an attractive period patina with honest age-related wear. Importantly, the crisp detail across both eagle heads has been preserved, making this an excellent display piece for the advanced Luftwaffe collector.
Because ceremonial capes were purchased privately rather than issued in large numbers, complete Original Luftwaffe Officer’s Cape Closure sets are encountered far less frequently than standard breast eagles, collar tabs or shoulder boards.
The Original Luftwaffe Officer’s Cape Closure was worn with the formal Luftwaffe officer’s cape, known as the Spanier. These capes were intended for ceremonial occasions, official receptions, theatre visits and formal military functions rather than everyday service wear.
The closure combined practicality with prestige. The sculptured eagle heads reflected the elegance of Luftwaffe officer dress while securely fastening the cape across the chest. Most surviving examples originate from private purchase uniform suppliers, with documented manufacturers including Assmann & Söhne, whose catalogues illustrate this distinctive design.
This Original Luftwaffe Officer’s Cape Closure remains in excellent collector condition. Both eagle heads retain sharp detail, while the original chain and attachment hardware remain complete and fully functional. The untouched finish and natural ageing enhance both authenticity and display appeal.
Complete cape closures are considerably scarcer than most Luftwaffe insignia. Many ceremonial capes were discarded after the war, leaving relatively few complete clasp sets available to collectors today.
