More about the product

An original Spanish Civil War Silver Wound Badge (Verwundetenabzeichen in Silber), awarded to German personnel wounded while serving with the Condor Legion during the Spanish Civil War (1936–1939). This scarce award represents an important precursor to the better-known 1939 Second World War Wound Badge and is highly sought after by collectors of both Condor Legion and Blue Division militaria.

Originally instituted in 1938, the Spanish Civil War Wound Badge recognised German volunteers who sustained combat wounds while supporting Nationalist forces in Spain. The Silver Grade was awarded to personnel wounded three or four times, or who suffered more serious combat injuries. Many recipients later went on to serve in the Wehrmacht during the Second World War.

The obverse features the distinctive M35-style steel helmet bearing a swastika above crossed swords, surrounded by an oval laurel wreath. Unlike the standard 1939 Wound Badge, the Spanish Civil War pattern has several unique design characteristics, making it immediately recognisable to experienced collectors. Examples such as this remain considerably scarcer than their WWII counterparts.

This example retains an attractive silver finish with honest age-related patina and wear. The reverse is fitted with its original hinge, pin and catch assembly, all of which remain intact. The badge displays excellent detail throughout and would make an outstanding addition to any collection of Condor Legion, Spanish Civil War or German combat awards.
