Original SS Model 1933 Dagger Grip with Original Nickel-Silver Eagle and SS Runes

An authentic and increasingly difficult-to-find Original SS Model 1933 dagger grip, retaining both its original nickel-silver national eagle and enamel SS runic roundel. Removed from an original wartime dagger, this grip displays all the characteristics expected of an early-production example and represents an excellent restoration component or standalone collector’s piece.

Carved from solid hardwood and finished in the traditional black stain associated with SS service daggers, the grip has developed an attractive age patina while retaining crisp contours. Unlike many reproduction grips, the wood still exhibits subtle grain beneath the original finish, indicating traditional wartime manufacture rather than modern painted hardwood.

The grip retains its original SS runic insignia, correctly inset into the pommel. The enamel remains well preserved, displaying the distinctive twin Sig runes within the silvered bezel. The fitting exhibits natural age and sits correctly within the timber, consistent with original factory installation.

Mounted to the centre of the grip is the original nickel-silver national eagle. The eagle displays sharp feather definition across the wings, well-executed chest plumage and a crisply detailed oak-leaf wreath enclosing the swastika. The fit of the eagle remains excellent, with only the minor shrinkage gaps commonly encountered on genuine wartime examples due to natural movement of the wooden grip over more than eighty years.

The grip itself shows honest handling wear together with several small service marks that add to its authenticity without detracting from its overall appearance. The original black finish remains intact across the majority of the surface, while the contours remain crisp and well defined.

Original SS dagger grips complete with their factory-fitted eagle and runic button have become increasingly scarce, particularly examples retaining early nickel fittings. Consequently, they are highly sought after by collectors restoring original SS daggers and by specialists assembling reference collections of Third Reich edged weapons.

Historical Background

The SS Model 1933 Dagger was introduced following the rise of the SS as an independent organisation within Nazi Germany. Intended as both a ceremonial and service sidearm, the dagger quickly became one of the most recognisable symbols of SS membership.

Early production daggers featured solid nickel-silver fittings, including the national eagle mounted within the grip and the distinctive enamel SS runic button. During the late 1930s, wartime material shortages gradually led manufacturers to adopt plated base metals and zinc fittings. As a result, surviving early nickel-mounted components are increasingly desirable to collectors today.

Authenticity Assessment

Based on the photographs provided, the grip displays numerous characteristics associated with original wartime manufacture, including:

  • Correct hand-carved profile.
  • Properly fitted enamel SS runic roundel.
  • Crisp nickel-silver national eagle.
  • Appropriate age-related patination.
  • Original-style black stained hardwood.

As with all detached dagger components, definitive authentication requires in-hand examination of the internal mortises and fitting surfaces. Nevertheless, the visible features are consistent with an authentic wartime SS Model 1933 dagger grip.

Collector Interest

Original SS dagger components have become increasingly difficult to source. Collectors frequently seek complete original grips to restore damaged daggers or replace incomplete examples. Early grips fitted with nickel-silver insignia command particular interest due to their association with pre-war production and their relatively low survival rate.
