Original Six-Place SS Ribbon Bar
This original
SS ribbon bar measures
90 mm long and combines six German award ribbons in a compact horizontal mounting. Its configuration includes military, political and commemorative decorations associated with the First and Second World Wars.Three miniature metal devices distinguish the front: an Iron Cross repeat clasp, SS long-service runes and a wreathed NSDAP eagle. In addition, the reverse retains black cloth backing and a long horizontal fastening pin.
SS Ribbon Bar: Award Configuration
The ribbons appear in the following order, reading from left to right:
| Position | Award |
|---|
| First | 1914 Iron Cross 2nd Class with miniature 1939 repeat clasp |
| Second | Eastern Front Medal 1941–42 |
| Third | SS Long Service Award with mounted runic device |
| Fourth | NSDAP 15-Year Long Service Award with wreathed eagle |
| Fifth | Sudetenland Commemorative Medal, 1 October 1938 |
| Sixth | Prussian Merit Cross for War Aid |
The repeat clasp represents a subsequent Iron Cross award to a recipient of the 1914 decoration. Meanwhile, the two blue ribbons carry different organisational devices. The SS ribbon displays runes, whereas the NSDAP ribbon combines paired edge stripes with a wreathed eagle. Finally, the Prussian War Aid Cross ribbon features alternating black and white stripes with red edges. The
Australian War Memorial’s collection record provides a useful reference for this distinctive pattern.
Construction and Measurements
The bar measures 90 mm across its six ribbon positions. Each ribbon wraps around the mounting, with folded edges visible along the reverse.Black cloth covers the rear, while the metal fastening pin extends across almost the full width. This arrangement provides a low-profile mounting for attachment to uniform loops. No readable maker’s mark appears in the supplied photographs, so the manufacturer remains unidentified.
Condition and Historical Interest
The ribbons retain clear colours and recognisable patterns. Furthermore, the miniature devices show surface toning and patina. Light wear appears around the cloth edges, although the backing remains largely complete.German ribbon bars represented a wearer’s decorations without requiring the full-size medals. Consequently, their ribbon combinations and miniature devices offer useful details for the study of uniforms and award systems.
