This Original SS-VT Officer’s Collar Patch is a scarce and highly collectable example of early SS-Verfügungstruppe (SS-VT) insignia. The patch features the correct black wool construction, aluminium officer’s piping and a single vertical aluminium rank stripe. These details identify the insignia as an officer’s right-hand collar patch, attributed to the rank of SS-Untersturmführer.
The Original SS-VT Officer’s Collar Patch dates from the formative years of the SS combat formations before they officially became the Waffen-SS in 1940. Consequently, genuine examples have become increasingly difficult to obtain and remain highly sought after by advanced collectors of Third Reich cloth insignia.
Furthermore, this example retains excellent original construction throughout. The black wool face remains well preserved, while the silver-grey aluminium piping frames the collar patch perfectly. In addition, the woven rank stripe retains excellent definition and colour. Together, these features give the insignia outstanding display appeal.
The SS-Verfügungstruppe (SS-VT) formed the military arm of the SS during the late 1930s. Unlike the Allgemeine-SS, the SS-VT trained as a professional combat force and provided the foundation for what later became the Waffen-SS.
Elite regiments including Leibstandarte SS Adolf Hitler, Deutschland, Germania and Der Führer wore insignia of this pattern before the Waffen-SS title officially replaced the SS-VT designation in 1940.
As the organisation expanded during the Second World War, many early insignia disappeared through combat, replacement and post-war destruction. Therefore, surviving original SS-VT collar patches remain significantly scarcer than later wartime examples.
This Original SS-VT Officer’s Collar Patch displays many of the construction details expected from an authentic period example.
Moreover, the reverse shows honest age together with original stitching and period materials that collectors expect to see on authentic examples.
The collar patch remains in very good original condition.
The wool retains excellent colour and texture. Likewise, the aluminium piping remains complete with only light age-related wear. The rank stripe displays sharp detail, while the reverse still retains its original buckram support. Finally, the patch exhibits honest service wear without significant damage or restoration.
Collectors value the Original SS-VT Officer’s Collar Patch because it represents the earliest combat formations of the SS. Unlike later Waffen-SS insignia, SS-VT examples belonged to a comparatively short period between the organisation’s formation and its redesignation in 1940.
In addition, this example combines strong originality, excellent construction and desirable officer-grade manufacture. As a result, it represents an important addition to any serious collection of SS insignia, Waffen-SS uniforms, or Third Reich military collectables.
