Original TeNo membership badges remain highly desirable among collectors of Third Reich insignia. Examples bearing an exceptionally low serial number, such as this badge, are especially scarce and command significant collector interest.
This beautifully manufactured badge is die-struck in bronze with a finely detailed national eagle above a laurel wreath. The centre retains its original multi-coloured enamel, displaying the distinctive Technische Nothilfe “TN” monogramwithin a silver cogwheel against a red and white background. The enamel remains bright, while the crisp details throughout reflect the quality associated with one of Germany’s leading badge makers.
The reverse retains its original vertical pin, hinge and catch. The pin is clearly stamped “Wilhelm Fohner, Pforzheim,”while the reverse also carries the “Ges. Gesch.” (Gesetzlich Geschützt) mark. Most importantly, the badge is individually numbered 165, an exceptionally low issue number that almost certainly places it among the earliest membership badges produced.
The Technische Nothilfe (Technical Emergency Service) was founded in 1919 and reorganised nationally in 1921. The organisation provided highly trained engineers, technicians and skilled tradesmen who maintained essential public services during industrial disputes, natural disasters and national emergencies.
During the Third Reich, TeNo expanded into a major technical organisation responsible for maintaining electricity, gas, water, transport and communications infrastructure. Its members also supported military engineering and civil defence operations throughout Germany and occupied Europe. As a result, TeNo became one of the Reich’s most important technical service organisations.
Original Technische Nothilfe membership badges have become increasingly difficult to obtain. Furthermore, collectors actively seek complete examples that retain their original enamel, maker’s mark and factory fittings.
Badges carrying very low membership numbers rarely appear on the market. The exceptionally low serial number 165makes this example considerably more desirable than later production badges and strongly suggests issue during the organisation’s early years. Consequently, this badge represents an outstanding opportunity for the serious collector of Third Reich technical, civil defence and political insignia.
The badge remains in excellent original condition. The enamel retains rich colour with only minor age-related crazing consistent with its age. The bronze finish displays an attractive untouched patina, while the reverse preserves the original pin assembly, clear Wilhelm Fohner maker’s mark, Ges. Gesch. stamp and the scarce serial number 165. Overall, this is a museum-quality collector’s example with outstanding historical significance and investment potential.
