An original Second World War German Iron Cross 1st Class (Eisernes Kreuz 1. Klasse 1939) complete with its original black leatherette presentation case. The cross features the classic black magnetic iron core with a silvered frame, bearing the swastika to the centre and the date 1939 to the lower arm.
The reverse retains its original pin, hinge and catch assembly and is maker marked “26” on the pin, identifying manufacture by B.H. Mayer’s Kunstprägeanstalt, Pforzheim, one of the recognised wartime producers of the Iron Cross.
The award is housed in its original fitted presentation case with a black leatherette exterior displaying the Iron Cross emblem to the lid, cream satin-lined interior and velvet-style fitted base. The case remains a desirable accompaniment, enhancing both the display and collector appeal of the set.
The Iron Cross 1st Class was instituted by Adolf Hitler on 1 September 1939, coinciding with the outbreak of the Second World War. It was awarded to personnel who had already received the Iron Cross 2nd Class and subsequently displayed further acts of bravery in combat or outstanding military leadership. Unlike the 2nd Class, the 1st Class was worn as a pin-back badge on the left breast pocket of the tunic and became one of Germany’s most recognisable combat decorations.
An excellent original cased example by a desirable maker, ideal for collectors of German militaria and Second World War awards.
The Iron Cross (Eisernes Kreuz) was originally established by King Frederick William III of Prussia in 1813 during the Napoleonic Wars and was subsequently reissued in 1870, 1914, and finally 1939. The 1939 version retained the distinctive cross pattée design while incorporating the national emblem and the date 1939.
The Iron Cross 1st Class could only be awarded after the recipient had received the Iron Cross 2nd Class, recognising continued gallantry, exceptional leadership or repeated acts of bravery under fire. It was awarded across all branches of the Heer, Kriegsmarine, Luftwaffe and Waffen-SS, making it one of the most prestigious and widely recognised German combat decorations of the Second World War.
Very good original condition with an attractive aged patina and honest service wear throughout. The black core retains much of its original finish, while the silvered frame displays light age-related wear consistent with period use. The reverse retains its original pin, hinge and catch, with the pin clearly marked “26” for B.H. Mayer, Pforzheim. The original presentation case is complete and remains in good condition, with only light signs of age and storage. Please study the photographs carefully as they form part of the description.
