More about the product

A 1939 Iron Cross 1st Class by Hymmen & Co., Lüdenscheid, with the L/53 mark on the lower reverse arm. This example has a central screwback fitting and retains its separate circular securing plate.

The black centre and silver-coloured frame show a clear contrast. Age toning remains across the frame, with wear to the exposed edges and circular contact marks on the reverse where the plate rests against the cross.

L/53 maker mark and construction

The small rectangular L/53 stamp identifies the maker named in this listing. Its position on the cross is worth noting when comparing examples: photographs of a separate retaining plate should not substitute for a view of the marked reverse arm.

A black iron centre sits within a separately made frame. The raised inner beading surrounds the central design, and the date 1939 appears on the lower arm. The close-up photographs show the border, lettering and finish in more detail.

Ratisbon’s records a Hymmen L/53 Iron Cross with three-part construction and a magnetic core. That is a pinback example, useful for maker comparison rather than an exact match for the mounting on this piece.

Screwback fitting

The threaded post projects from the centre of the reverse. Its broad circular plate secures the decoration behind the uniform cloth. Both components are present, allowing the mounting to be studied as a complete assembly.

The plate shows surface ageing around the centre, while corresponding circular marks remain on the rear of the cross. These details should be considered together with the thread, finish and construction when examining the piece. Consistent wear alone does not establish when two components were first paired.

Condition

The centre retains strong black finish, and the date and raised design remain well defined. Natural toning covers the surrounding frame. Light wear appears on the high points; the reverse shows patination and contact marks from the securing plate.

The L/53 mark is visible in the photographs. No major structural damage is apparent in those views. Dimensions, weight and a centre magnet-test result are not recorded in this listing; please ask if you need those details.

For the collection

The interest here lies in the combination of the marked Hymmen cross and its screwback attachment. It offers a useful comparison with the pinback examples more often encountered in an Iron Cross collection.
