An exceptionally attractive and scarce pre-1942 SS-Gruppenführer collar tab, executed in high-quality hand-embroidered aluminum bullion on a black velvet backing. This elegant early pattern represents the rank of SS-Gruppenführer as worn prior to the April 1942 revision of the Waffen-SS and Allgemeine-SS general officer insignia, when the rank was denoted by three embroidered oak leaves without a rank pip.
The tab features finely hand-couched aluminum bullion embroidery depicting the distinctive three-leaf oak spray with acorns, a design reserved for one of the senior general officer ranks within the SS hierarchy. The embroidery exhibits excellent depth and craftsmanship, with padded oak leaves, individually stitched veins, and finely executed acorns, all characteristic of quality period tailor-made insignia.
The tab is finished with the correct silver officer’s twisted cord border surrounding the black velvet face. The reverse displays period construction, including the original buckram stiffener and hand-finished backing, consistent with high-grade privately tailored officer insignia of the pre-war and early wartime period.
Displaying honest age and light service wear, this collar tab remains a highly desirable example of early SS general officer insignia. Original pre-1942 general officer collar tabs are considerably scarcer than their later wartime counterparts due to the 1942 insignia redesign, making surviving examples increasingly difficult to obtain.
A superb and historically significant piece of Third Reich SS insignia, ideal for the advanced collector of early Allgemeine-SS or Waffen-SS uniforms and insignia.
