More about the product

An original WW2 German SA Sports Badge (SA-Sportabzeichen) in bronze, retaining much of its original finish and complete with its original hinge, pin and catch assembly.

The obverse displays the familiar design of a vertical sword superimposed over a swastika, enclosed within an oak leaf wreath. The reverse is stamped with the individual award number 442372, identifying it as a numbered production example. Also present is the raised reverse inscription “Eigentum d. Obersten SA-Führung” (“Property of the Supreme SA Leadership”), a standard feature of authentic period examples.

The badge exhibits honest age-related wear and patina consistent with wartime service and storage, while retaining crisp detail throughout the wreath, sword and central device. The pin assembly remains complete and functional.

Introduced in 1933 by the Sturmabteilung (SA), the SA Sports Badge was awarded to individuals who successfully completed demanding tests of physical fitness, endurance and military skills. It later became authorised for wear by members of other Nazi organisations and branches of the Wehrmacht, making it one of the most widely awarded decorations of the Third Reich.

A desirable original numbered example, ideal for collectors of Third Reich awards, SA memorabilia and WWII militaria.

Historical Background

The SA Sports Badge (SA-Sportabzeichen) was instituted in November 1933 by SA Chief of Staff Ernst Röhm to encourage physical fitness, military preparedness and ideological commitment among members of the Sturmabteilung. Candidates were required to complete a demanding programme of athletics, endurance and military-style exercises.

The award quickly became one of the Third Reich’s most widely recognised proficiency badges and was later authorised for members of the Wehrmacht and several other state organisations. Early examples were individually numbered, adding further collectability for modern-day collectors.
