Hammesfahr erased Röhm SS dagger

This Hammesfahr erased Röhm SS dagger follows the early Model 1933 pattern. It features a shaped black wooden grip, inset SS runic roundel, national eagle and metal crossguards. An accompanying black scabbard completes the ensemble. The surviving maker’s trademark identifies Gottlieb Hammesfahr of Solingen-Foche. Meanwhile, the worked reverse blade forms the basis of its existing erased Röhm attribution.

Blade motto and reverse finishing

The obverse carries the etched motto “Meine Ehre heißt Treue”, meaning “My honour is loyalty”. Its Gothic lettering remains clearly readable, while reflective areas survive across the blade. The reverse shows extensive abrasive lines and surface working. No readable Röhm dedication remains, although the manufacturer’s trademark survives near the crossguard. Scattered spotting, scratches and patches of discolouration also appear on the steel. This treatment is consistent with inscription removal. However, the photographs alone cannot establish when the work occurred or whether the manufacturer performed it. Therefore, this description uses “erased Röhm” without claiming documented factory grinding.

Gottlieb Hammesfahr maker history

Gottlieb Hammesfahr manufactured edged weapons in Solingen-Foche. Documented early SS daggers from the firm include examples bearing Röhm dedications and others with subsequently removed inscriptions. The blade retains portions of the firm’s name, location and trademark device. Although surface working has reduced the mark’s clarity, its surviving details support the Hammesfahr identification. For further comparison, consult Weitze’s Hammesfahr SS dagger with a partly surviving Röhm dedication. Assess the trademark alongside blade geometry, fittings and construction; a comparable dealer listing does not independently authenticate this example.

Grip, crossguards and markings

The black wooden grip retains its characteristic shaped profile. Both the inset runic roundel and national eagle remain present, and the obverse provides an attractive display. On the reverse, cracks and local damage appear near the lower crossguard. These defects form an important part of the condition assessment. The crossguards and tang nut show aged toning and small surface marks. A Roman-numeral stamp appears on the reverse lower guard, but it does not identify an individual owner. No readable personal name or SS membership number appears in the supplied photographs.

Black scabbard and condition

The scabbard retains a dark surface with mottled wear, scratches and local marks. Its upper fitting carries the suspension ring, while the lower chape displays dents and handling wear.No separate leather hanger accompanies the dagger in the photographed views. Likewise, the photographs do not establish concealed component markings or whether every part has remained together since manufacture.Overall, this Hammesfahr erased Röhm SS dagger combines a legible motto, surviving maker mark and visibly altered reverse blade. Grip damage, abrasive blade finishing and scabbard wear remain its principal condition considerations.

Historical context and ownership

Following Röhm’s murder in 1934, owners removed his dedication from daggers in different ways. Surviving examples consequently range from partly erased inscriptions to completely worked blade faces. The original recipient of this dagger remains unidentified. No documented ownership history accompanies the present description, so it carries no named-person attribution.Explore our SS dagger collection and wider historical edged weapons for related examples.
